Abstract

One of the most important constraints of poultry production is disease. Among the major important diseases are: viral, fungal, bacterial and parasitic infections. A cross sectional survey was carried out in small-scale poultry farmers in Kisii County, Kenya to establish the common diseases and their management practices. A structured and semi-structured questionnaire was administered to 400 households. Sampled households were obtained from a target population of 247,050 using a stratified random sampling technique. Analysis of data was performed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 16 software. Results indicated that majority of the farmers (58.8%) were male while 55% had a farm size of less than one acre. Newcastle (29.3%) was the most important poultry disease in the study area. Of the interviewed farmers, 46.6% relied on both ethno vet and conventional medicine to treat their birds. More than 65% of the farmers did not vaccinate their birds while those who vaccinated, never did it regularly.
