Industry FAQs

What is “Access Subscription” support used for?

It covers activation, verification, and troubleshooting of subscriber access for institutions, including on campus access, proxy access, and SSO workflows.

How does on campus access usually work?

Most institutions use registered IP ranges. When a user connects from an authorized IP, access is granted automatically without additional login.

How do off campus users access subscribed content?

Many libraries use a proxy (such as EZproxy) or an SSO method (Shibboleth/SAML) so users can authenticate remotely and still receive subscriber access.

What should I send if access is not working for multiple users on campus?

Provide the institution name, subscription contact email, a failing URL, a screenshot or error message, and an example user IP address if available.

What should I send if remote access through proxy is failing?

Share the proxy type (for example EZproxy), a sample proxied URL, the target URL, any recent configuration changes, and the error message or screenshot.

Users say content is locked even though we have a subscription. Why might this happen?

Common causes include IP range changes not updated, proxy routing issues, expired session/authentication problems, or access requests reaching from an unrecognized network.

How do we update our institution’s IP ranges?

Send the updated IP ranges, the effective date of the change, and the subscription contact email associated with the institution.

Can you help with link resolver or discovery layer issues?

Yes. Provide the resolver or discovery system name, example citations/records, and the links that fail or misdirect users.

What information helps troubleshoot fastest?

Exact failing URLs, date/time of the issue, on campus/off campus status, screenshot or full error text, and access method (IP, proxy, or SSO).

Can access issues affect only specific journals or years?

Yes. If coverage is limited or entitlements differ by journal or time period, access may vary. Share the journal name, volume/issue/year, and the exact URL for validation.
