Review on: Role of Legume Forage Meal Supplementation on Feed Intake, Weight Gain, Digestibility and Carcass Characteristics of Ruminant Livestock
This paper recapitulates the role of legume forage meal supplementation on feed intake, weight gain, and digestibility and carcass characteristics of ruminant livestock. The different research works that had been carried out on ruminant livestock that fed on a basal diet of roughage based diets and supplemented with leaf meal(hay) of forage legumes demonstrated that supplementation of legume forages stimulated microorganism function in the rumen, reduced retention time and thus increased the intake of the feeds. Furthermore, different research output demonstrated the advantages of forage legume supplementation in process of digestibility which had depicted that supplementation of legume forages such as Lablab purpureus, Cowpea, pigeon pea, alfalfa and Sesbania sesba, Tagasaste, L. pallida, Desmodium leaf meal (hay) had played significant role in improvements in digestibility of DM, OM, CP, NDF and ADF. Moreover, this review paper also had been demonstrated the positive effect of supplementation of legume forages leaf meals on weight gain and carcass characteristics in ruminant livestock as did concentrate supplements. Therefore, it is advisable to livestock producers to use legume forage leaf as protein supplements in order to improve the livestock production and boost the economic advantages. Despite the many research output on effect of supplementation on ruminant livestock, the availability of information to the livestock producers is very low. Future research be aimed to demonstrate many of research output on supplementation effect of legume forages wider scale in order to benefits the communities. This review paper also not reported supplementation effect of forage legumes on carcass quality characteristics such as carcass compositions and chilling losses which should be reviewed in the future in order to fill the gap.
Participatory on – Farm Evaluation and Demonstration of Improved Herbaceous Forage Species in Irrigated Lowlands of Dassench Woreda of South Omo Zone
Participatory on farm improved forage species evaluation was conducted at Keelewe Peasant association of Dassench Woreda of South Omo Zone in the 2014 under irrigated condition using the improved forage legumes to identify the adaptable and high biomass yielding forage species. The field experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications per tested species. The improved forage legume species tested in this study were Lablab purpureus, Lablab intoritum and Vigna unguiculatium. The dry matter yield obtained in this study revealed that there was none significance difference (p > 0.05) among the tested improved forage legume species in the study area. The dry matter yield production potential of tested species under irrigated condition in to the study area is 15.91, 14.16 and 15.40 t/ha for Lablab intoritum, Lablab purpureus and Vagigna ungulatium respectively. Out of the tested forge legume species over cropping season under irrigated condition, the one which gave the maximum dry matter yield was Lablab intoritum which gave (16 tones ha-1) and Vagigna ungulatium (15.40 tones ha-1) are advisable for the study areas. Therefore, it is imperative to evaluate the forage species for more seasons under similar condition and in addition to their feeding value under different intervention, chemical composition, their response to the disease and pest resistance, seed producing potential and dry matter production potential of species under supplementation different level of fertilizer rate.
Participatory on – Farm Evaluation and Demonstration of Improved Forage Species under Rain Fed Condition in Hamer Woreda of South Omo Zone
Participatory field experiment was conducted at Dimeka zuriya peasant associations of Hamer woreda of South Omo zone in the 2014 main cropping season at on farm condition under rain fed using the improved legume forage species to identify the adaptable and high biomass yielding forage species. The field experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications where trial agro pastoralists farm were considered as replications. The improved legume forage species tested were Lablab purpureus, Lablab intoritum, and Vigna unguiculata. Each improved legume species was planted in a single plot area of 3 m x 4m. The average fresh biomass yield (FBY) and dry matter yield (DMY) of the tested species were 20 tone/ha, 14.84 tone/ha and 12 tone/ha and 7.2 tone /ha, 4.5 tone/ha and 6.8 tone /ha for Labalab purpureus, Lablab intoritum and Vigna unguiculata.
