Kalyana Chakravarthy Pentapati is a Professor in the Department of Public Health Dentistry at Manipal College of Dental Sciences (MCODS), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE). He earned his MDS in Public Health Dentistry from the same institution in 2010. His research interests include dental public health, evidence-based dentistry, and epidemiological studies. He has numerous affiliations across institutions in India, China, the UK, and the USA, contributing significantly to dental research and education.

Relationship of Oral Hygiene Practices and Dental Caries among School Children of Sullia taluk, Karnataka, South India
Objective: we aimed to evaluate the prevalence of dental caries, treatment needs and oral hygiene practices school going children of Sullia taluk. Materials and methods: A total of 1800 school children constituted the study sample. Each age group consisted of 600 children. Information on oral hygiene methods was collected. Dental caries was recorded using dft/DMFT as per WHO 1997 guidelines. Results: The prevalence of dental caries was found to be 33.6% in Sulliataluk. The prevalence of dental caries was found among 5 year old 31.0%, 12 year old 32.8% and 15 year old 37.0% respectively. Prevalence of dental caries among tooth brush using 32.6% and finger users 42.8%. This observation was statistically significant (P<0.05). The percentage of caries affected children was low among tooth paste user (30.5%) and those who brush their teeth twice daily (10.6%). The prevalence of dental caries found to be slightly higher among urban (34.2%) and mixed diet group (34.9%) compared to rural (33.3%) and vegetarian group (32.9%). In all the age groups the decayed teeth accounted for the greatest percentage in both deciduous and permanent dentition. The greatest treatment need for study population was one surface restoration. Conclusion: Prevalence of dental caries for the entire study population was 33.6% and the treatment need among the study population revealed that greatest need was for one surface restoration followed by other treatment.
Efficacy of Chlorhexidine in Reduction of Microbial Contamination in Commercially Available Alginate materials a in-Vitro Study
Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of contamination, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of chlorhexidine against the isolated microbes and also to assess the surface activity of chlorhexidine in three commercially available alginate impression materials. Materials and Methods: Twelve sealed packets of three different routinely used alginate impression materials were used. Three 0.1 gram samples were aseptically obtained from each packet. These were inoculated in glucose broth, thioglycolate broth and sabouraud’s dextrose agar tubes and were incubated for seven days. Surface activity of chlorhexidine in alginate mix was assessed using the Agar well technique. Results: A total of 24 out of 36 samples inoculated on various media showed growth, with an average contamination frequency of 67%. Bacillus species was highest in all three brands, followed by aerobic spore bearing bacilli and coagulase negative staphylococcus. Pseudomonas species was detected in two brands. All dilutions at 20μg/ml or above were clear of turbidity at 0.02% concentration, 10μg/ml or above were clear of turbidity at 0.05% concentration and all dilutions were clear of turbidity at 0.1% concentration. Conclusion: The level of contamination with microorganisms in commercially available alginate materials is effective alternative for disinfection impression material.
