Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy in the Treatment of Peri-Implantitis
Peri-implantitis is a chronic inflammation that compromises osseointegration and the longevity of dental implants. This study reviewed the literature on the efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in the treatment of peri-implantitis, analyzing its mechanisms, protocols, and clinical and microbiological outcomes. This exploratory literature review analyzed articles published between 2020 and 2025 in the SciELO, PubMed, LILACS, and Google Scholar databases, meeting previously defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. aPDT proved effective in reducing biofilm, inflammatory parameters, and probing depth, especially when combined with mechanical debridement. Despite the heterogeneity of protocols, the results suggest that aPDT is a safe and promising approach with no risk of bacterial resistance. Further studies are needed for standardization and clinical validation
