Evolution of Eponyms Use in General Surgery Residency Publications in Argentina

Introduction: The tendency to use eponyms and traditional anatomic terms when identifying anatomic structures, often used by the medical community in general, and more often used locally at the surgical sphere, has become deeply rooted. However, both anatomy teaching and international publications today use the International Anatomical Terminology (IAT), effective since 1998 to encourage the use of a universal, uniform and updated terminology. The IAT, as the official list of anatomical structures, aims at facilitating communication and understanding among health professional globally. Objective: To demonstrate use of the traditional anatomical terminology that employs eponyms in scientific publications in Argentina. Material And Methods: A statistical retrospective study was performed in which 91 articles published in the Argentinean Journal of Surgical Residents from 2008 to 2013 were reviewed and compared. Reference to anatomical structures was reviewed, as well as its frequency and use.

Specificities in Pedagogical use, Content Management and Performance with a Virtual Space in Neuroanatomy

Introduction: The implementation of virtual space for teaching and learning (VSTL) leads objectives (performance) and subjective benefits (social peer relationships) in the process of teaching and learning. The study of neuroanatomy added difficulties inherent to the object of study, which requires greater abstraction, tridimension and relationship with other knowledge. Objective: To evaluate parameters of use, content management and performance, specifying instructional strategies used in Neuroanatomy through the implementation of a VSTL. Materials and Methods: An observational, retrospective and cross-sectional study on parameters of use, content management and performance in 309 university students with an EVEA applied in 3 commissions of Human Anatomy matter. The results were divided according to the rotation of matter (neuroanatomy and musculoskeletal with splanchnology contents) and pedagogical strategy activities (clinical and surgical cases and clinical imaging cases); statistical parameters (descriptive and inferential) were applied and correlated with the socioeconomic characteristics of users. The work complied with the ethical and legal standards. Results: The access time was the day of the practical work. The activities recorded most times of realization, especially that presented clinical-surgical high rate of deprecated. Working hours per week were correlated with the outcome (R2= 0.76). The performance in virtual Neuroanatomy activities presented specifications related to the object of study and teaching strategies associated. The number of work hours impacted both performance and management of the content and features of using virtual space.

Social-Economic Factor as a Determining Factor of Parameters of use and Performance in a TLVE Applied to Anatomy Teaching

Introduction: In preliminary studies, we have determined that there is a high adhesion and usefulness with the use of virtual spaces (TLVE) in Anatomy students as a teaching resource which is supplemental to practical assignments (PA) of the subject. The population on which studies have been conducted showed an important heterogeneity regarding the social-economic characteristics of participants. Purpose: To assess the impact of the social-economic factor of students in the parameters of use, adhesion and performance in the virtual space, with specification of the teaching techniques used. Materials and Methods: Observational, retrospective and transversal study on parameters of use and performance with a TLVE in a cohort of 309 students. Results have been divided by areas of the subject, statistical parameters have been applied (descriptive and inferential) and they were correlated with the above- referenced data of social-economic characteristics. The work complies with applicable ethical-legal regulations. Results: The working hours of students were correlated with the use of the TLVE (number of inclusions/day r2=0.75 and week r2=0.78) and performance in clinical-surgical cases was proportional to the logging time (r2=0.75). Conclusions: Working activity together with university studies and, specially, the time of weekly working activity, were determining factors in the performance obtained in the virtual space and in the parameters of use of the technological resource.
