Jaafar Umar is a Lecturer II in the Department of Biology at Federal University Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria. He holds an M.Sc in Plant Physiology and Genomics from Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto. His research focuses on plant stress physiology, particularly the effects of salinity and drought on Capsicum annuum and Solanum lycopersicum. He has published 16 works and accumulated 33 citations, with an h-index of 4. His notable studies include the role of proline and glycine betaine as tolerance indicators in pepper and the impact of salinity on tomato growth and yield.

A Study on Proline and Glycine Betaine Contents as Salinity and Drought Tolerant Indicators in Capsicum Annuum L. (Cultivar: Roma).
In this research, accumulation of free proline and Glycine betaine contents was investigated in Solanum lycopersicum L. in response to environmental stress (drought and salinity). After salt and drought treatments in the field the plant samples both stressed and unstressed were used to evaluate the level of free proline and Glycine betaine contents. Proline and Glycine betaine content increase significantly (P<0.05) with increasing salt concentration in a concentration dependent manner. However, the result did not differ significantly among drought induced plants. The low level of proline and Glycine betaine contents produce by the plant induced with salinity and drought is a possible indicator of water deficit and salt tolerant in Solanum lycopersicum (cultivar: Roma).
