Abstract

Introduction: Breast cancer (ICD-10 C50) is the leading neoplasm in women and one of the major causes of global mortality. The prevalence in the state of Rondônia in 2024 was 3,264 cases, representing 11.24% of all cancers. Factors such as age, parity, and estrogen exposure are implicated, and social and racial inequalities have been shown to significantly impact mortality.

Objective: To analyze the epidemiology of breast cancer in Rondônia, evaluating the effectiveness of screening and the social impact of inequalities in access. Methods: This is an epidemiological, descriptive, and cross-sectional study, developed from secondary data referring to the period from 2021 to 2024. The information was extracted from the public platform of the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS), the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS), and the Cancer Information System (SISCAM), for analysis of active patients and screening exams in the state public network.
Results and Discussion: In 2024, there were 3,264 active cases (11.24% of the total), with a higher prevalence in the age group over 50 years, but with a significant increase in younger women. There was a 38.9% increase in incidence (2021-2024). The annual mammography coverage was only 29.1%, below the international recommendation, suggesting a failure to reach the target population. Black and Indigenous women showed lower proportional participation in screening, highlighting weaknesses in coverage equity and potential delays in diagnosis.
Conclusion: Although the state has public policies and infrastructure for breast cancer screening, it remains a public health problem in Rondônia. More structured strategies are still needed, with expanded coverage, reduced waiting times, improved technical qualification of services, and strengthened actions aimed at equity in access.
