Human Capital Challenges in Sustainability Start-ups- Attracting, Retaining, and Developing Talented Individuals
Sustainability start-ups play a critical role in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges. However, they face a number of human capital challenges in attracting, retaining, and developing talented individuals. These challenges include lack of brand awareness, competition from established companies, high turnover, burn-out, lack of career growth opportunities, limited resources, and lack of expertise. This paper reviews the literature on human capital challenges in start-ups and sustainability start-ups. It then identifies the unique human capital challenges faced by sustainability start-ups and evaluates the effectiveness of different strategies for addressing these challenges. Finally, the paper investigates the impact of human capital challenges on the performance of sustainability start-ups. The paper finds that sustainability start-ups face a number of unique human capital challenges.
