Abstract

Purpose: The prospective study was conducted in a randomized sample of population, with the aim to find the prevalence of developmental speech & language delays or regression in children admitted to an Advanced Pediatrics Neurodevelopment Indoor Unit in a tertiary care hospital in India. Methodology: The authors evaluated 130 children comprising 82 male subjects and 48 female subjects older than eleven months of age admitted to the advanced pediatric unit. Prevalence was assessed through alternate day visit by the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) to the neurodevelopment ward. Evaluation was initiated by taking the case-history of the existing problem and noting medical diagnosis at the time of admission. Assessment of the language delays and regression in speech is done by using Receptive & Expressive Language Skills (REELS) scale. Results & Discussion: Total no. of children effected in the present group is approximately 46% (60 out of 130 cases are showing delayed speech & language skills as assessed on REELS).The various associated findings are more prevalent in the expressive language disorders and mixed receptive and expressive language disorders. The prevalence of DSL in a neurodevelopment inpatient unit is higher than the prevalence in the community. Because some of were previously unrecognized, acute hospitalization is an excellent opportunity to conduct developmental screening. Conclusion: Usually all communication disorders carry the potential to isolate individuals from their social and educational surroundings, it is very essential to find appropriate timely intervention.
