Abstract

This article analyzes the role of the market system structured by ETG in the development of agricultural value chains in Mozambique, from 2020 to 2023. The research, qualitative in nature and based on a single case study, sought to understand the company’s operating mechanisms, its contributions to agricultural productivity and marketing, the challenges faced, and the overall influence on value chain performance. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with smallholder farmers, ETG field technicians, company managers, market intermediaries, government representatives, and institutional partners. The results reveal that ETG developed diversified market structuring mechanisms, including organized purchasing points, predictable schedules, fixed prices, training programs, and support for associative organization. The company’s intervention significantly contributed to increased productivity, reduced post-harvest losses, improved product flow, and strengthened farmers’ bargaining power. However, complex challenges persist: logistical and operational limitations, communication and trust difficulties, tensions with intermediaries, perceptions of opacity in price and quality criteria, exclusion of vulnerable groups, and risks of excessive dependence on the company. The multidimensional analysis of value chain performance – considering efficiency, equity, and sustainability – allowed concluding that ETG’s intervention generates profound but contradictory impacts: it strengthens but also creates dependence, includes but also excludes, generates opportunities but also risks.
