The shortcomings of the “traditional” concept of seismic intensity from the viewpoint of requirements of accuracy of input data to be used in specific engineering activities are recognized on one hand. An illustrative case of deriving wrong conclusions due to some of these shortcomings is referred to. On the other hand, the importance of the concept of seismic intensity for the management of a large, worldwide, treasury of information and for some current activities too, is also recognized. An attempt of bridging the gap between engineering requirements and the use of the concept of seismic intensity is presented, introducing alternative approaches to the definition of seismic intensity, relying on specific instrumental information. The main reasons of proposals are discussed. The main starting points are presented too. This is followed by analytical developments related to the features of alternative definitions proposed. Some illustrative cases dealt with on the basis of these developments are then presented. A short look at conclusions derived and on desirable future activities is then dealt with.
