Dr. R. T. Kashinath is a researcher in medical biochemistry with a focus on Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, membrane lipid alterations, thiol-disulfide balance, and the effects of organosulfur compounds. He has held positions at Basaveshwara Medical College & Hospital, BLDE University, Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences, and Subbaiah Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Center, all in India. He holds an MSc in Biochemistry, a PhD in Biochemistry (Medical Faculty), and is a Fellow of the Indian College of Surgeons (FICS).

Study of Serum and Urinary Calcium Levels in Pregnancy Induced Hypertension Cases in and around Chitradurga
Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH) is defined as multisystem disorder of unknown aetiology causing vasospasm and anoxia and there is a raised blood pressure recorded at least on two occasions at 6 hours apart. It is thought that preeclampsia develop when the pregnancy induced systemic response causes one or more maternal system to decompensate. The high foetal demand for calcium is facilitated by profound physiological interactions between mother and foetus. Biochemical changes in PIH are increased plasma Creatinine, urea and uric acid concentration with proteinuria due to renal glomerular endotheliosis leading to impaired glomerular perfusion and filtration. A case control comparative study was done with PIH and normal pregnant women both from outpatient and inpatient of Basaveshwara Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Chitradurga, according to the criteria. Study group will be followed up every four weeks from 28th week of gestation and 24hour/random urine sample will be collected for Biochemical evaluation of urinary Calcium, Creatinine and protein. In this study, it was found that there was significant hypocalciuria (p<0.001), moderately significant elevations of creatinine in urine (p<0.01) and significant increases in urinary protein (p<0.001) was associated with preeclampsia compared to normal pregnant women, further in our study, it was also found that there was moderately significant hypocalcaemia (p<0.01) and significant hyperuricemia (p<0.001) and normal Creatinine levels in blood compared to normal pregnant women. Suggesting that, measurement of calcium in urine along with estimation of protein in urine may be used as screening tests along with estimation of blood levels of calcium and uric acid for confirming PIH cases. Effect of Membrane Cholesterol on Glucose uptake in Diabetic Erythrocytes
The generally observed common phenomenon of decreased utilization of glucose by tissue cells in type 2 diabetes mellitus is attributed to either lack of insulin or due to non availability of functioning insulin. Some of the recent studies indicate the decreased glucose utilization may be due to variations in the membrane lipid composition, there by altering glucose transport across the membrane possibly by disorienting the membrane transport molecules. Such a membrane lipid alteration may be due to diabetes induced dyslipidemia.
Erythrocyte membrane lipid alteration in type 2 Diabetic subjects
The lipid components present in biological membranes including erythrocyte membrane are significant in regulation of the membrane fluidity as well as transport across the membranes. The conflicting results of either increase or decrease or no change have been reported in erythrocyte membrane fluidity in type 2 diabetic subjects. The diabetes induced dyslipidemia possibly lead to an alteration in erythrocyte membrane lipid composition. Hence a study was undertaken to assess erythrocyte membrane lipid alterations in type 2 diabetic subjects. The blood samples from randomly selected type 2 diabetic subjects, attending Medical OPD of Basaveshwara Medical College Hospital, Chitradurga, were collected with heparin as an anticoagulant. Erythrocyte membrane total cholesterol (mTC), Erythrocyte membrane phospholipids (mPL), Erythrocyte membrane phosphatidyl choline, Erythrocyte membrane sphingomyelin and Erythrocyte membrane phospholipids/ Erythrocyte membrane cholesterol ratio were studied. The results suggests a significant rise in erythrocyte membrane cholesterol (mTC, N=1.25±0.31, T2DM= 1.54± 0.14, p<0.001), erythrocyte membrane phospholipid contents (mPL, N=6.99±1.84, T2DM=23.44±10.31, p<0.001), Erythrocyte membrane sphingomyelin, (N=9.28± 1.37, T2DM=19.32± 2.37), Erythrocyte membrane phosphatidyl choline (N=27.08± 1.58, T2DM=26.09±3.04, p<0.001), as well as phospholipid/cholesterol ratio (mPL/mTC, N=6.08±2.65, T2DM=11.76±5.31, p<0.001.) in type 2 diabetic subjects was observed. Though, there is a significant alteration seen between normal and diabetic groups, but there was no significant change was observed between male and female subjects of both normal as well as diabetic groups.
