Exploring Vocabulary Learning Strategiesused by Bangladeshi Undergraduate EFL Learners: A Comparative Analysis of Three Proficiency Level Learners
The goal of the study is to explore Vocabulary Learning Strategies used by Bangladeshi undergraduate EFL learners. The survey was conducted among 70 undergraduate BBA major students of United International University, a private university in Bangladesh. A 45 item-Vocabulary Learning Strategies questionnaire was used as the research tool. The finding reveals that, Bangladeshi undergraduate EFL learners highly use determination strategies and moderately use social, memory, cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies. Among them cognitive strategy is least used. The study also discovered that, these learners make little changes in their strategy uses at different proficiency levels. Considering the findings, the researcher has pointed out some implications for teaching VLS. It has also offered some suggestions regarding more effective use of Vocabulary Learning Strategies by Bangladeshi undergraduate EFL learners.
Bangladeshi Engineering EFL Learnersa Attitudes towards Learning English: A Comparison between Public University and Private University Students.
The objective of this paper is to explore Bangladeshi engineering EFL learners’ attitude towards learning English. The study was conducted among 67 students of Computer Science and Engineering departments of United International University, a private University in Bangladeshi and Jahangir Nagar University, a public university in Bangladesh. Data were collected through a 34 items attitude test questionnaire. The findings report that, engineering EFL learners both in public and private universities have moderately positive emotional and cognitive attitudes and highly positive behavioral attitudes to learning English. The study also exposes that, public university students are less competent, more exam-oriented, and more discouraged by bad results. They are also more eager to continue English courses than private university learners. The study also offers some possible solutions to change the overall negative attitudes and to help public university learners stand up equally on the platform of learning the global language.
Professional Development of EFL Teachers using Internet at Tertiary Level in Bangladesh: Purposes, Influences and Problems
The aim of this study is to investigate the purposes, influences and problems of using internet for professional development of the tertiary level EFL teachers in Bangladesh. Using internet for academic and professional resources can improve EFL teachers’ expertise to a great extent. Therefore, increasing its effective uses and removing its barrier are just the need of time. The study finds that, although tertiary level EFL teachers are aware of benefits of internet and using internet for their professional development, they are facing a number of problems, like poor internet speed, high cost, lack of institutional support, workload, lack of technological skill and lack of proper training. Based on the findings this paper will also recommend some possible solutions of these problems.
