Modern backup power sources, built on unprotected diesel generator sets, are likely to be damaged under the impact of High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP), either in vast areas or locally when a different type of electromagnetic weapon is used. They will not be able to perform in critical emergency situations for which they have actually been designed. This article suggests protective measures for microprocessor-controlled diesel generators of various capacities and purposes.
