Bio

Getahun Asebe is an academic and researcher affiliated with Gambella University in Ethiopia, where he serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal Science within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resource. His work focuses on animal science, veterinary public health, and infectious diseases, with a particular emphasis on livestock feed resources, animal welfare, and the epidemiology of vector-borne diseases in the Gambella region. He has contributed to numerous studies on topics ranging from fish preservation and dairy calf rearing to hard tick control and assisted reproductive technologies. With a DVM, MSc in Tropical and Infectious Diseases, and a PhD in Veterinary Public Health from Addis Ababa University, Dr. Asebe has built a robust research portfolio that includes 27 publications, 379 citations, an h-index of 10, and an i10-index of 12. His work is widely recognized, and he has served as a reviewer for journals such as those from Omics Publishing Group and Hindawi. Overview of the Biology, Epidemiology and Control Methods against Hard Ticks: A Review

Ticks are among the obligated ecotparasites that feed blood of vertebrates; particularly mammals; birds; and they are arachnids in the subclass Acari; closely related to mites; surviving for up to several years. This review paper dials about the biology; epidemiology and control methods of hard ticks. Morphologically they are classified into two families known as Ixodidae and Argasidae. All hard ticks feed only on blood of their hosts. They are active during warm periods and easily find their hosts by grapping using their front legs and attach on the suitable site. In their life cycle they have three active stages called larvae; nymphs and adults after eggs is released which is dormant.

Characterization of Common Horse Feeds in Selected areas of Ethiopia

Introduction: Horses, along with a number of other domesticated species, are still used for work power animals in many developing countries. A study was conducted in Debrezeit, Adama, Debre brihan and Hawassa towns in Ethiopia in 2012/13 with the objective of determining the chemical composition of the common horse feed resources. Methods: Feed samples were collected from three major groups namely; carthorse owners, horse feed traders and feed processors as replication for determination of chemical composition. The samples were collected systematically. Feed analysis was done at the National Veterinary Institute (NVI) Bishoftu, Ethiopia, based on the proximate feed analysis method.

Evaluation of Crossbred Hifer Calves Rearing Practices and Growth Performace in Urban and Peri-Urban Dairy Systems of Sebeta Awas Wereda, Oromia, Ethiopia

The study was aimed at evaluating the rearing practice and growth performance of heifer calves in urban and peri-urban dairy systems of Sebeta Awas Wereda, Oromia National Regional State, Ethiopia. Stratified random sampling method was used to select target farms and sample respondents for the prepared questionnaire. Farms for monitoring study was selected from data collected during the survey. Eighteen farms, which had crossbred dairy heifer calves of (3-6 months of age), were purposively selected from both production systems and across the entire herd size category. Eighteen heifer calves were monitored from 18 different farms (2 production systems*3 farm sizes *3 replicates). The overall average crossbred dairy herd size per household was 10.6+2.1 in urban and 11.3+2 in peri-urban area, where, the proportion of heifers accounted for 50.5% for urban and 48.8% for peri-urban farms of their respective total herds.

Effect of Drying Methods and Pre Treatments on Shelf Life and Microbial Quality of fish (Oreochromis Niloticus, Pylodictis Olivaris and Cyprinus Carpio) Species Commonly used in Gambella Region

A study was conducted to assess the effect of drying methods and pre-treatments on shelf-life and microbial quality of dried fish. The experiment was conducted in factorial arrangement of 2×3×2 with two drying methods (sun and oven drying,) three fish species (tilapia, cat fish and carp) and two preservatives treatment (garlic and ginger juice) laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Fresh fillets were analyzed for their microbiological quality. Drying reduced the moisture contents making it safe for long term storage. The dried fillets were stored at ambient condition and the samples were analyzed for microbial status every twenty days starting from the end of drying operation. Fresh fillet and untreated dry fillet were used as control. In the fresh fillets, a high load of aerobic bacteria of 5.11 log10 cfu/g was observed on carp, and E.coli was detected in all three species whereas no Salmonella spp.
