This paper sought to identify Issues, Challenges and Prospects of Gender Education in Nigeria Implications for Sports Administration. The population of the study comprised of 3993 male and female secondary school teachers from the six Geopolitical zones in Nigeria. The multiple stage sampling technique was used to select 5 schools from each of the (6) six geopolitical zones of the country. Out of which 277 were males while 3716 were females. Sampling them at 50% rate a total of 138 males and 1858 females were sampled. The instrument for data collection was the use of questionnaire which was validated by two experts each from departments of Educational Foundations and Human Kinetics & Health Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka. The validated instrument was trial – tested with the use of Crobach alpha co-efficient to obtain an internal consistency reliability of 0.78. Mean scores were used to profer answers to the two research questions, while the t-test statistics was used to test the null hypotheses.
Introduction: Academic performance of university student impacts their future educational attainment and health. The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between the selected health determinants and academic performance of undergraduate students of Universiti Putra Malaysia. Materials & Methods: An analytical cross sectional study was conducted among undergraduate students in Universiti Putra Malaysia. Undergraduate students were chosen by systematic random sampling based on the list of undergraduate students. A self-administered pre-tested questionnaire was used to collect data on health related behavior and academic performance. Results: There were 9,852 undergraduates’ population for 2011 and all the entire 1314 students completed the questionnaire (672 females and 642 males). The response rate was 100%, the mean age of the respondents was 21.89 and standard deviation is 2.208 years. The sample comprised of 76.7% Malays, 9.8% Chinese and 13.5 % Indians. In terms of academic performance, measured through CGPA showed that 40.7% of the respondents gained below 3.00, 39.5% obtained 3.01 to 3.50 only 19.6% have good CGPA ranging from 3.51 to 4.00. The majority of the respondent (79.5%) agreed that having good grades is very important. Based on body mass index (BMI) 54% or (709) respondents have normal body weight and only 6.2% respondents were obese. There is no significant difference in the mean of academic performance score for males (M=3.22, SD=.371) and female students (M=3.23. SD=.62). There was significant relationship between religiosity, subjective health status, socio economic perception and academic performance (r=.123, P < 0.01). Only three predictor variables were significant in explaining academic performance namely: religiosity (p > .001), health status (p < .007) and physical activity (p < .0.20). Conclusion: This research seeks to contribute to the evidence based on the importance of health on academic performance of the particular
This paper qualitatively reviewed the interaction between sexual harassment and job involvement among female teaching staff in Pakistan. The intensive literature review on the topic, along with personal cultural experience induced this study to conclude that the featured variables have an inverse relation with each other, with reference to female teaching staff in Pakistan.
Atherosclerosis is a complex and common disease contributing to increased mortality and morbidity. The exact global incidence of atherosclerosis is beyond calculation. Autopsy studies can provide information about the impact and course of atherosclerosis. Present study is undertaken to study the spectrum and distribution of atherosclerotic lesions in the coronary arteries and the association of age, sex, diet, socio-economic status, smoking and alcohol consuming habits with atherosclerosis. Methods : Heart specimens were obtained from medicolegal autopsies. Sections from representative areas were studied for gross and microscopic evidence of atherosclerosis. Results : Among the 50 cases studied 35 were males and 15 were females. Coronary arteries of 24 males (72.72%) and 9 females (27.27%) showed atherosclerosis. Males were affected more than females. Age has a dominant influence on atherosclerosis, it increased with age. 33 (66%) cases showed coronary atherosclerosis. Upper class, obesity, alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking trends have dominant role in acceleration of atherosclerotic lesions. Religion and vegetarianism have lesser affect on atherosclerosis. Among coronaries, left anterior descending artery is most commonly involved. Conclusion : Autopsy studies play a vital role in unraveling the spectrum and occurrence of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a complex and multifactorial disease. Smoking and alcoholism can accelerate the development of atherosclerosis. The incidence of atherosclerosis in developing countries (like India) is same as developed countries.
Due to inadequacy in pure mathematics among physicists, the non-existence of dynamic solutions for the Einstein equation was not recognized. Instead, his field equation was perpetuated. The positive energy theorem of Schoen and Yau also continues such an error. Although Yau may not have made errors in mathematics, their positive energy theorem produced not only just useless but also misleading results in physics. Since the Einstein equation does not have a bounded dynamic solution, the condition of asymptotically flat implies that the case can only be a static solution. Thus, their positive energy theorem actually does not have a meaningful application in physics. Yau failed to see this problem of misleading since he has not attempted to find explicit examples to illustrate their theorem. Moreover, E. Witten made the same mistake in his alternative proof, but that was also cited as an achievement for his Fields Medal in 1990. Concurrently, outstanding mathematical contributions of Yau to the completion of the Poincare conjecture are pointed out. Related issues are also discussed. 04.20.-q, 04.20.Cv
Cameroon Pidgin English is one of the principal languages of inter-ethnic communication in Cameroon. Linguists and writers such as, Mbassi-Manga (1976), Menang (1979, 2005), Mbangwana (1983, 2004), Todd (1984), Ngome (1985), Echu (2003), Simo Bobda and Wolf (2003), Ayafor (2005), Neba et al (2006) and others have examined various aspects of Pidgin English in Cameroon. But as the language continues to grow and spread, there is need to continually tract it. This paper sets out to show the linguistic inventiveness, especially among the young and lively people, in quest of fresh, original, pungent expressions, to rename ideas, actions and entities in Cameroon Pidgin English. It highlights the morphological and semantic innovations of Cameroon Pidgin English slang items across speech and shows their originality of form and meaning. Focus is on their semantic fields, innovative word formation processes such as coinage (neologism), compounding and semantic extension, as well as their novel meaning and social value. All these juvenile qualities combine to give free rein to the impulse to play with the language, making it creative and refreshing.
The reputations of politicians as well as other popular figures depend on public perceptions and once reputations are threatened, images repair becomes vital. This paper focuses on the image repair strategies used in the public letter of apology (30 November 2011) by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai released shortly after divorcing his wife Lorcadia Karimatsenga. The major concern is to determine the effectiveness of the communication devices used in redeeming the PM’s image in the public eye. Benoit’s Image Repair Theory (1995) is used as theoretical guide and methodological impetus of the study. Benoit theory provides a mechanism for analyzing the communication strategies used. Five major impression management strategies are adopted: denial, evasion of responsibility, reducing the offensiveness of the event, corrective action and mortification. It is concluded in this study that despite the mistake of omitting some important details that could have assisted in clearing his name, the image repair strategies used by Tsvangirai were to a large extent effective
This paper finds support for the trilemma for Brazil, suggesting that the three trilemma policies are binding and constrained. Adopting an independently floating exchange rate regime, Brazil has pursued the policy combination of monetary independence and financial integration in recent years. More exchange rate stability or more financial integration reduces the inflation rate, and more financial integration reduces inflation volatility. More monetary independence reduces the growth rate. More financial integration reduces output volatility. Hence, more exchange rate stability and more financial integration produce positive benefits whereas more monetary independence yields a negative impact on the growth rate.
This paper reports on a study of the use of downtoners, an important hedging device, by Chinese translators when translating Chinese subtitles into English. The study was carried out by making a corpus-based analysis of patterns of using downtoners in a Chinese subtitle corpus and an English subtitle corpus. Features of overuse and underuse of downtoners in subtitle translation by the Chinese translators were also classified and further examined. The Chinese subtitle corpus consisted of the English subtitles of four Chinese movies produced by translators from the main Chinese-speaking areas: Hong Kong, the mainland China, and Taiwan. The English one contained the English subtitles of four authentic English movies. The study finds that compared with authentic English movie subtitles, the English subtitles of Chinese movies tend to overuse most of the downtoners except for diminishers, which leads to non-nativelikenss. In light of the corpus-based evidence, the paper argues for the importance of incorporating corpusbased findings into subtitle translation programs and general English writing programs and suggests ways to improve the translation and writing quality.
