Aslumisacompactareaofovercrowdedpopulation,poorlybuiltcongesteddwellingcondition,unhygienic environment usually with inadequate infrastructureandlackinginpropersanitaryanddrinkingwaterfacilities.Livingconditionsinslumshaveadirectimpactonpeople’shealth. One of the major challenges that face urban plannersgloballyistheproliferationofslumsinurbanareasandthehostofhealthhazardsthattheybringalongwiththeirwake.However,theprolificspreadofslumshasbeenarampantproblem in urban areas worldwide. Eventually, the extent andspread of slums in India not only help us to recognize that theyare not anomalous and pathological phenomena on the urbanlandscape but also a manifestation of urban poverty that is stillpredominant in the urban economy. This study is an attempt tounfold the underlying problems of development of slums.
