In this paper, numerical analysis of a pile-soil interaction problem is presented considering the parameters influencing the axial load-deformation behavior of the pile embedded in a layered soil medium. The analysis is demonstrated with parametric solutions of a pile with underlain model soil strata under the axial force. An attempt is made to ascertain the extent of influence of elastic properties of the pile, geometry of the pile, end conditions of the pile and the elastic properties of the underlain soil strata on the response of the piles under axial loads lying in a model soil layers in terms of the settlement of the pile and the internal deformation of the pile. The study revealed that the increase in modulus of elasticity of pile improves the settlement resistance of the pile, increase in the ratio of cross sectional dimensions causes decrease in the top deformations of the pile, the settlement of the pile reduced to a great extent when the cross section of the pile adopted is non circular instead of circular and increase in the elastic modulii of top and bottom layers of soil has decreased the settlement of the pile to a great extent, but elastic modulus of soil layers other than top and bottom has got negligible influence on the settlement of the pile.
This article had the purpose to analyze the rural land valorization of a major Brazilian city in coffee production in the period of expansion of coffee production into the northeast of São Paulo state at the end of the 19th century. In this research, we aimed to understand the value of the lands and the impact of land improvements and of coffee plantations on the prices of rural lands.
This paper is primarily concerned to explore widerange of socio-economic and political dimensions of marginalization that characterizes Ayille minority group in Woliatta zone, Southern Ethiopia. It investigates the overall living condition of Ayilles in terms of economic, social and political aspects within the socio-cultural endeavors of the host society. The study has been carried out in three purposely identified areas in Woliatta zone. Across sectional qualitative method was employed (in-depth interview and Focus Group Discussion) involving a total of 37 in-depth informants, 6 Focus group discussions comprising of 6 individuals in each group through purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Traditionally, this group lost the rights and privileges in the society at large and did not get equal treatment similar to other people. In the years before 1974 revolution, some of them did not own essential resources like land and livestock of any kind. They were restricted in social interaction and prohibited from participating in social activities collectively with the dominant groups. However, after 1974 revolution the living condition of Ayilles generally improved since they gained access to land. Accompanied with this, the social relationship they had with the host society enhanced. The recent conversion to Christianity in the areas, the economic improvement in their lives could be mentioned as some of the causes for their recognition. Even so, although they are better off economically in the course of share cropping and rearing arrangements, their social life is still subjected to restriction which is in plain sight mainly in production activities, social interaction and commensality, submissive greetings and stereotypic image about this group, and most stunningly in the issue of intermarriage.
Introduction Frequent consequence of a stroke is disturbances of communication expressed through difficulties or completely lost of ability for expression and / or understanding of speech. Aim of study is to determine SLD presence in relation to patient age, sex, functional impairment side of the body and the smoking habits. Methodology We took data from the medical records of 746 patients included in the rehabilitation after stroke. Results Average age of the sample was 67.50 years. Over one third of patients had registered two or more diseases. The most common type of stroke is ischemic. Near ¾ samples with right-sided, about 1/5 sample with the left sided, third with bilateral functional impairments of the body and one-quarter of patients without significant functional impairment had SLD. Conclusion Most of the samples with right-sided functional impairments body had SLD; a smaller part of the left sided functional impairments had presented SLD.
Anumber of important qualitative changes in demand have taken place in recent years, such as the rise in education, income and status levels in the market (Richards 2007). This means that the public’s general knowledge is increasing, making them become more demanding and better informed. This change, along with greater interest in experiences (Monteagudo 2008) and creativity and the growing presence of technology, social media and digital platforms (Bryce 2001; Castells 2001, 2005; Gere 2002; Lévy 2007; Qualman 2009; Nimrod and Adoni, 2012; Fernandez 2013) is forcing many industries to shiftfrom the traditional management model to a new one where the main actor is the audience and what they feel, with the offer focusing on facilitating memorable experiences (Pine and Gilmore 1999; Monteagudo 2008) rather than merely selling information or services.
The basis of relativistic dynamics is rendered consistent with the Planck-Einstein relations in a novel concept termed the Light. What the Light shows is that what is thought of as the rest mass of a particle of matter is in fact frequency. In turn the Light inevitably leads us to the Equivalence Identity and the conclusion that (a) the Newtonian concept of mass does not exist, and (b) tidal effects are local. Even though this was shown in [2] it was not emphasized and articulated to the extent that it perhaps should have been, and based upon some comments by Dunning-Davies [1] we shall give a detailed justification of the Light, and both (a) and (b). Both the Light and Equivalence Identity are the necessary foundations for a new paradigm of physics. The significance of this for Newtonian mechanics, Maxwell’s equations, special relativity, general relativity, and quantum mechanics will be discussed.
This article is conducted to investigate the English language learning style of the higher secondary learners in Bangladesh and how far the teachers are aware about the learners’ preferences. For this purpose, 30 students were selected from 3 higher secondary colleges to express their styles through a questionnaire as to how they preferred learning English as a foreign language. Moreover, this study also included 8 teachers’ interview on how they perceive learners’ preferences while teaching English. The questionnaire containing 13 items, were adopted and adapted from Reid’s (1987) original study of perceptual learning style preferences. The findings of the study showed some specific styles preferred by most of the learners. In various cases, the teachers were not aware of the learners’ styles and those who were aware showed their problems of implementing these styles in classroom. The article ends with some suggestions in order to aware teachers and learners about the effectiveness of learning styles.
This paper focuses on the media reportage of the Ebola Virus Disease which has ravaged parts of West Africa, particularly Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. Although the disease found its way into Nigeria through the Late Patrick Sawyer, Nigerian authorities quickly arrested the situation, for which they are getting well deserved commendations across the globe. The presentation derives its theoretical relevance from the agenda setting perspective which says that even though the media may not succeed in telling people what to think, they are stunningly successful in telling people what to think about. Information and perspectives were obtained from secondary sources of books, newspapers, magazines, and the electronic media. Interestingly, the research found a high success rate of communication efforts as it concerns the Ebola scourge, across cultural and geographical boundaries. The paper recommends among others, the immortalization of Late Dr. Stella Adadevoh for her sacrifice while ensuring that the war against Ebola is sustained through a further enhancement of public enlightenment.
Human brain and language are closely related to each other as normal speech production is hampered when brain receives an injury. The names of Paul Broca and Carl Wernick are closely associated with the research of brainlanguage relationship. To find out the practicality of their research it is necessary to study of some cases regarding Broca’s aphasia and Wernick’s aphasia. This article has attempted to analyze the symptoms of aphasia, to explore how this influence language and cognitive behaviors. Based on interviewing three patients the findings reveal that if left hemisphere of human brain gets any trauma normal language production is hampered. The article ends with some suggestion to help the patient’s surroundings recovering language soon.
